Oathbringer is in the editing stage now, and has been since December. Like how you can love your children, but still be VERY ready to be done with them by the end of a long day.

That’s something the fans don’t see, usually, is how by the end of the process, the author has been through the novel so many times they’re getting very tired of it all. In a good way-I’m very proud of it-but man, it has been a long, long write. (Though there were some other projects in there.) That’s still amazing to me, because it took SO long. For Oathbringer, it started in June 2014 and finished in December 2016-so two and a half years. This one usually takes around six months. The third stage of the book is the actual writing stage. It does include physically writing things down as well-though, with the Stormlight books, much is still locked away in my brain. I consider it Outlining when I go to the gym and play out potential scenes of the book in my mind. “Outlining” is the second stage of a book, and is actually pretty vague. Creating the original ideas, mixing them together, playing with possibilities-this is what drew me to become a storyteller in the first place. This is the most fun part of the process for me, as you can probably imagine.

This began to coalesce as I was working on Words of Radiance, and I began aggressively outlining this story right after I finished Book Two. Technically, the first ideas for Oathbringer came in 1999, when I began imagining a soldier who had fought on the Shattered Plains returning home, at long last, to his village. I have an outline for the series, of course, but I like those outlines to have lots of wiggle-room. For a sequel like Oathbringer, this generally starts as I’m finishing the previous book. This is where the ideas run wild and free in my brain, interacting with one another, doing cool things. I thought maybe I’d talk about the parts of a story’s life. I’ve been thinking about this one, and what to add-and the most prominent, time-consuming thing in my life right now is Oathbringer.
